Understanding Roof Flashing

As we review estimates or meet with contractors, roofers, or public adjusters; we are amazed at how often the different types of roof flashing are confused and used improperly in estimates. Most roofers who actually do the work, tend to know what flashing goes where and how to use it and install it. In case you need a refresher here is a good illustration.

Apron Flashing: A term used for a flashing located at the juncture of the top of a sloped roof and a vertical wall, chimney or steeper-sloped roof.

Step Flashing: Individual pieces of sheet-metal material used to flash walls, around chimneys, dormers and such projections along the slope of a roof. Individual pieces are overlapped and stepped up the vertical surface.
